Road Warriors: New Orleans Pelicans Take 2-0 Series Lead Over The Portland Trail Blazers

TheSource Feed - Wed, 04/18/2018 - 8:20am

The Portland Trailblazers are officially in trouble.

Anthony Davis had a double-double and Jrue Holiday added a playoff career-high 33 points, as the New Orleans Pelicans held on for a 111-102 win over the Blazers on Tuesday. The Pelicans hold a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series as they head back home for Game 3.

The Trailblazers looked overmatched and overwhelmed. Holiday has also been brilliant defensively, particularly when tasked with guarding Damian Lillard. The Blazers all-star has just two points on 0-of-8 shooting with Holiday guarding him this series. Lillard finished the game with 17 points.

It was hard to say what the Pelicans would be after DeMarcus Cousins went down, but they’ve recommitted to a spread style with Davis roaming the middle. Holiday has been so damn good. They’ve found shooting in E’Twaun Moore and Darius Miller, and even Rajon Rondo can hit a spot-up shot. The Nikola Mirotic trade solidified this lineup.

The Pelicans just need to win two more, and they have at least three at home. What a team, and what a game this was.

ESPN And Fox Sports To Team Up For UFC Television Rights

TheSource Feed - Wed, 04/18/2018 - 8:14am

Content is king. So when to rivals are both in need of great content, it could make for some strange alliances.

Rival networks ESPN and FOX Sports have teamed up to put in a bid for the UFC’s new TV rights deal, according to Variety.com.

According to the report, as many as 15 UFC events could head to the new subscription streaming service ESPN+. The service launched this past week and costs $4.99 per month.

The current deal with FOX, which began in 2011 and ends this year, brings in an average of $120 million a year, with the price jumping to $160 million for this final year.

For ESPN, a UFC deal would provide premium live-event content for the fledgling ESPN+ service not currently available on the company’s linear cable channels. ESPN+ launched last week at $4.99 per month with a mix of content including select games from MLB, NHL, and out-of-market MLS games.

ESPN is desperate for new content, so spiting cost and events with Fox Sports is actually a good business move. Fox Sports is also expected to make a play for the WWE television right when they become available next year.

Funkmaster Flex Talks Nicki Minaj Vs. Cardi B and Ghostwriting on Instagram Live

TheSource Feed - Wed, 04/18/2018 - 8:08am

Funkmaster Flex turned up on Instagram Live on Monday to talk about Hip-Hop’s top female rappers. The legendary DJ also wanted to address his frustration with rappers hiring ghostwriters.

Cardi B and Nicki Minaj were the focus of most of the conversation with Remy Ma and Lil Kim also being mentioned at points during the roughly twenty minute live stream.

“I don’t put Cardi B in the category of all the other rappers,” Flex said from the Hot 97 studio. “I think she’s an entertainer.” Funk Flex also admits that he thinks Cardi’s album is good, but he still puts Nicki Minaj over the reality tv star turned rapper.

“With a ghostwriter she’s not touching Nicki. So, what is she touching without a ghostwriter,” Flex asked.

Following the release of Cardi B’s single “Be Careful” a video was found on Twitter of fellow New York rapper Pardison Fontaine spitting his own version of the track which generated theories that the “Bodak Yellow” rapper had a ghostwriter — something that Flex repeatedly says he hates during his live stream.

“The lyrics are so simple for Cardi B’s songs, to know that you didn’t even write that…” Flex said breaking out in laughter before he could finish the thought. “Cardi’s consistently getting someone else to write her s–t.”

Flex’s rant comes after debates on social media of who is the better artist between Nicki Minaj and Cardi B. Cardi B’s very successful Invasion of Privacy album was out for about a week before Nicki dropped two new tracks, “Barbie Tingz” and “Chun-Li” which helped get the conversation started. As the debate wages on, many on social media including Flex have acknowledged that it is possible to support both artists.

When asked where Flex places Lil Kim in regard to Nicki Minaj, the DJ could not answer because Lil Kim “touches a place in my heart” as far as the era the Brooklyn rapper came from. However, Flex didn’t bite his tongue when it came to Remy Ma who Flex believes “washed” Nicki Minaj with “SHEther.”

LA Attorney General’s Office Rejects Rape Case Against Too Short

TheSource Feed - Wed, 04/18/2018 - 7:44am

A rape case against rapper Too Short has fallen apart due to insufficient evidence.

Teana Louis filed papers in Los Angeles back in January, claiming the West Coast Hip Hop icon, whose real name Todd Anthony Shaw, sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions in 2016. She alleged he forced her to have oral and anal sex against her wishes, according to media reports, while she was working on a song with the rapper.

Louis sued the “Blow The Whistle” hitmaker for sexual battery, sexual harassment, gender violence, gender discrimination, and false imprisonment, but the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has rejected the case, explaining there wasn’t enough evidence to prove the plaintiff didn’t consent to the sexual encounters.

Too Short was “adamant Teana conjured up the whole thing just to get into his pockets,” according to reports. Multiple websites reported that Too Short in March produced what he said were explicit texts from Louis that showed she believed the two were having a sexual relationship.

New York Attorney General Launches Inquiry Into Bitcoin Exchanges

TheSource Feed - Tue, 04/17/2018 - 8:47pm

New York’s top cop is launching an inquiry into cryptocurrency exchanges amid rising concern about the nascent digital markets.

State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (D) on Tuesday announced the “Virtual Markets Integrity Initiative,” an inquiry seeking to examine the “policies and practices of platforms” that trade in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.

The initiative aims to protect cryptocurrency investors and consumers by boosting the transparency and accountability of the digital trading platforms.

Schneiderman sent letters to 13 exchanges including Coinbase, Gemini Trust Company, Bitstamp USA and Huobi Global Limited to provide key information about their ownership, operations, trading policies and procedures, outages and other trading suspensions as well as details about privacy and money laundering, according to a press release on the initiative.

“With cryptocurrency on the rise, consumers in New York and across the country have a right to transparency and accountability when they invest their money. Yet too often, consumers don’t have the basic facts they need to assess the fairness, integrity, and security of these trading platforms,” Schneiderman said in a statement.

Cyber thieves are increasingly targeting virtual currencies, which have spiked in value. Those changes have raised new questions over how the government should regulate the growing industry.

Representatives from Schneiderman’s office wrote in a questionnaire accompanying the letter that although virtual currencies have “captured the imagination of millions of people worldwide,” they also continue to be a “highly speculative sector, featuring significant volatility, instability, and risk.”

Today In Hip Hop History: X-Clan Drops Debut Album ‘To The East, Blackwards’ 28 Years Ago

TheSource Feed - Tue, 04/17/2018 - 10:21am

On this day in 1990, “The Verbalizer” Brother J, Professor X “The Overseer”, Paradise “The Architect” and DJ Sugar Shaft “The Rhythm Provider” collectively known as X-Clan, released their debut LP To The East, Blackwards on 4th And B’Way/Island Records.

Produced by the entire crew that was put together by Paradise, who at the time ran the NYC Hip Hop hotspot Latin Quarters nightclub, this album helped to pioneer a movement of Black empowerment in Hip Hop culture with an infusion of Parliament/Funkadelic that was attractive to the youth of that era. Their “Blackwatch” organization, which was led by Professor X’s father, Brooklyn activist Sonny “Abubadika” Carson, legitimized their involvement in raising the consciousness of the Hip Hop generation and their 11 track, debut project was one of the tools that they used to attract their cult-like followers.

Tracks such as “Funkin’ Lesson” and “Heed The Word Of The Brother” led to the album’s mainstream visibility, however, other songs like “A Day Of Outrage(Operation Snatchback)”, “Verbs Of Power” and “In The Ways Of The Scales” allow Brother J to instruct the listeners about the socio-political issues of people of African descent around the world, but primarily in the United States.

Salute to the original members of X-Clan as well as those who continue to carry the legacy of the Clan(Master CHina, Lord Cza, Kumu, DJ Fat Jack and the others). Thanks for this timeless piece of Hip Hop history!

R. Kelly Sex Cult Victim Says She Was Infected With STD

TheSource Feed - Tue, 04/17/2018 - 9:28am

Things are consistently getting worse for R. Kelly.

His latest accuser is a Texas woman who claims that Kelly infected her with a sexually transmitted disease and supplied her with drugs and alcohol. The unidentified woman filed a complaint last week with the Dallas Police Department and is also preparing to file a federal civil complaint against the veteran singer.

In this new complaint, the woman states that she met Kelly last June when she was 19, and claims that he infected her with the STD in Dallas, Texas, in December. The complaint also charges that Kelly was grooming the woman to join his alleged “sex cult.”

Philadelphia-based attorney Lee Merritt, who is representing the woman, said that his client ended her relationship with Kelly in February. Merritt added that during the relationship, “our client was the victim of several forms of criminal misconduct by Kelly, including, but not limited to, unlawful restraint, furnishing alcohol and illegal drugs to a minor, and aggravated assault (via the referenced intentional STD infection).”

The accuser also states in her claims that she’s reached out to Joycelyn Savage’s family via Instagram to tell them she had spent time with Jocelyn. As we previously reported, Joycelyn’s parents believe that Kelly is running a sex cult involving her daughter and several other women, however, Joycelyn told the media that she’s not being held against her will.

A rep for R. Kelly says the singer “categorically denies all claims and allegations” related to this new complaint.

Meanwhile, Merritt plans to hold a news conference in Dallas, Texas, on Wednesday (April 18) to further explain this new legal case against R. Kelly.

Hip-Hop and Spoken Word are like two sides of the same LP.

All one have to do is listen to Gil Scott Heron or The Last Poets, and they would clearly see the thread between those poets and rappers like Kendrick and Nas. It is the rhythmic recitation of a beat- the drum, the dj or the sample that separates the two (or does it)?

On Saturday, April 21st, The Source magazine celebrates National Poetry Month by co-hosting the Hip-Hop & Poetry, Words Showcase and Open Mic at The Nuyorican Poets Café at 236 E. 3rd St.

If you have bars, a gifted pen or just a magnetic personality that spits that fly sh*t that people want to hear, then come down and touch the legendary Nuyorican Café.

The Nuyorican Poets Café has been a cultural icon on New York’s Lower East Side since 1973, where it provided platform for Puerto Rican and Latino poets.  It was founded in the East Village apartment of writer, poet, and Rutgers University professor Miguel Algarín and his co-founders Miguel Piñero, Bimbo Rivas and Lucky Cienfuegos. In the 90’s, it took a different shift and became a destination for some of Hip-Hop’s most gifted lyricists.

Rocky Presents & The Nuyorican Poets Cafe are hosts to the longest running Hip-Hop open mics in New York City. These shows have a history of launching the careers of many well-known performers as well as providing a venue for up-and-coming artists to try out new material. This Hip-Hop Poetry, Words Showcase and Open Mic has featured Company Flow, Canibus, Mos Def, M.C. Search, Willie Perdomo, Reg E. Gaines, Danny Hoch, Saul Williams, muMS the schemer, and Suheir Hammad, among others.  In fact when Russell Simmons launched his hit HBO show, Def Poetry Jam, many of these poets were scooped right from this scene.

Will you be the next?  Come through and test you skills… or just come through and enjoy the set.

Dwayne Wade’s Performance Sparks Heat Over 76ers, Thanks Kevin Hart for “Motivation”

TheSource Feed - Tue, 04/17/2018 - 8:48am

The Philadelphia 76ers seem to be the young upstart darlings of the NBA. After blowing out the Miami Heat in game 1, many penciled in the 76ers to advance to the next round.

Dwayne Wade didn’t get that message. His 28 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists off the bench to pace Miami and snap Philadelphia’s 17-game win streak. The Heat won the game, 103-113, to tie the series at one apiece.

Wade set the Heat’s record for most points in a playoff game by a bench player. While having a monster game, Wade moved up to No. 10 on the league’s all-time leading playoff scorers list in the process. Wade’s exceptional performance was actually fueled by Philadelphia native Kevin Hart.

Hart was seen yelling throughout the entire game. Every time the TNT cameras panned to the crowd, you could see Hart standing up, screaming, and waving his hands.

After the game, Wade talked to Ramona Shelburne about his performance. Wade said, “You can thank Kevin Hart for that.” Wade and Hart are friends so this is all in good fun, but Kevin Hart might want to tone it down a bit for Game 3 — unless he wants to motivate Flash like that again.

Look what you did, @KevinHart4real. pic.twitter.com/cIPwIruXyG

— ESPN (@espn) April 17, 2018

The series now shifts to Miami for the next two games. If the Heat can expect Wade to play like this every game in the playoffs, the 76ers might not be the runaway favorites in this series after all.

Adidas Willing To Give Colin Kaepernick Endorsement Deal If He Lands An NFL Job

TheSource Feed - Tue, 04/17/2018 - 8:35am

Colin Kaepernick still doesn’t have an NFL job. If he had one, Kaepernick could be in line for some endorsement deals.

Mark King, the President of Adidas’ North America division, told the Arizona Republic on Friday that the company wants to sign Kaepernick to an endorsement deal but only if he makes it on an NFL roster. “If he signs on a team, we would definitely want to sign him,” King said.

He also went on to say that Adidas isn’t “in the business of activism, we’re in the business of sport,” but that “allowing our athletes to tell their story, it’s really important to us.”

Kaepernick hasn’t had any real job offers lately. The Seatle Seahawks had a meeting with Kaperneck, but backed out at the last minute and ended up signing someone. Kaepernick’s recent tweet indicates he has no desire to stand for the flag, which could hinder any chances of landing with a new team.

— Colin Kaepernick (@Kaepernick7) April 16, 2018

It’s understandable that Adidas would want Kaepernick to be on a team before signing him, given the exposure he would get in the country’s most popular league. But it’s not like the quarterback would be able to wear Adidas cleats during NFL games, as Nike has an exclusive deal with the league to supply its uniforms and apparel that runs until 2028.

Drake Announces Next Album ‘Scorpion’ will be Released in June

TheSource Feed - Tue, 04/17/2018 - 8:13am

After a short hiatus from the music scene, Drake returned to music and to the charts with “God’s Plan” back in January. With 12 weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts, Drake beat his own record making “God’s Plan” his longest leading No. 1 record, with “One Dance” coming in at a close second.

Now, it’s been a little over a week since the release of his latest female empowerment single Nice For What,” which has officially dethroned “God’s Plan” and taken the No. 1 spot. Two No. 1 chart leading singles later, Drake takes to Instagram to hint at the release of his next album.

In a picture with his back facing the camera, Drake wears a satin black jacket with ‘Scorpion’ printed across the top. The words ‘June Twenty Eighteen’ are also displayed on the jacket, as well as apart of the picture’s caption. Furthermore, if listeners can recall the last line on Drake’s ‘Do Not Disturb’ from the More Life album — he clearly states he’ll be back in 2018 to give us a summary of the lifestyle he’s been living after taking a small break.

With much anticipation to hear Drake’s new album, we are just as excited to proclaim Summer 2018 as “Drizzy season”.

Baltimore Ravens Emerge As Early Front Runners For Dez Bryant

TheSource Feed - Tue, 04/17/2018 - 8:07am

Last week, the Dallas Cowboys released Dez Bryant.

Bryant, who had been with the Cowboys since they drafted him in the first round of the 2010 draft, has been to three Pro Bowls, and he’s one of the most well-known names in the NFL wide receiver ranks. Bryant feels he still has a lot left in the tank and desires to land on his feet, with a new franchise real soon.

If I didn’t have my edge I got it now… I’m sorry they got to feel me it’s personal… it’s very personal

— Dez Bryant (@DezBryant) April 13, 2018

The timing of his release was terrible, because many NFL teams used up most of their salary cap space. Luckily for Dez, an early front-runner for his services has emerged.

The Baltimore Ravens are interested in Bryant, according to a report from Jeff Zrebiac of the Baltimore Sun. The Ravens already recently agreed to terms with Michael Crabtree, and they may be looking to give Joe Flacco another big-name target.

Considering general manager Ozzie Newsome‘s lengthy track record of attempting to extract value out of declining receivers, it’s easy to imagine Bryant corralling Flacco’s passes in 2018. Even before the Crabtree addition, Newsome’s affinity for veteran wideouts featured fliers on Mike WallaceSteve SmithAnquan Boldin, Lee Evans and Derrick Mason.

The Ravens have more than $10 million in salary-cap space, so they should have the financial means to make a deal happen if they so desire. Bryant caught 69 balls for 838 yards and six touchdowns last season.

Happy Birthday To Hip Hop Pioneer DJ Kool Herc!

TheSource Feed - Mon, 04/16/2018 - 9:58am

On this day in 1955, DJ Kool Herc was born Clive Campbell in Kingston, Jamaica. He moved to the Bronx when he was 12 years old and took on the name “Kool Herc” when he became a member of the graffiti crew the “Ex-Vandals”. The name is short for ‘Hercules’ because of his 6′ 4″ stature. He began DJing parties that he and his sister Cindy threw in their building, which was on 1520 Sedgewick Avenue(Sedgewick & Cedar) in the South Bronx.

Herc pioneered extending the break beat on records by playing the same record on two turntables and cueing the “break” in the record, which he noticed had the greatest effect on the dancers at the parties. This was emulated all over the NYC area during the 1970s, thus spawning the culture of Hip Hop. He coined the terms “B-Boys” and “B-Girls” for the dancers who were “breaking”, which Herc says was a street slang for “acting energetically” or “causing a disturbance”.

Kool Herc has influenced other founding pioneers of Hip Hop culture including Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash, and the Sugarhill Gang.

The Source would like to give Kool Herc his proper salute because without him and his contributions, none of us would had the opportunity to experience this global phenomenon known as Hip Hop!

Andre The Giant Proven To Be Larger Than Life In New Documentary

TheSource Feed - Mon, 04/16/2018 - 7:10am

Andre the Giant, subject of a new HBO documentary, was huge, literally. The wrestler seemed almost to have stepped out of legend or myth. Billed at a whopping 7-foot-4 and 477 pounds, he was a veritable Grendel, with deep-set eyes, frizzy hair, and a protruding jaw.

The documentary tells the story of a once normal-sized man from France whose eventual extraordinary girth led him into a world of entertainment that not only celebrated him but at times made him feel like the loneliest man in the world. A man that wanted desperately to not only be liked but to fit in.

Andre was a gentle giant that suffered a lot of pain.  He was a man who suffered from alcoholism as his popularity grew, as told through interviews with Ric Flair, Jerry Lawler, and Vince McMahon and at the end suffered immense pain before dying in France shortly after the death of his father.

No matter your level of wrestling fandom – this inside look into the traveling carnival-style world which Andre chose to embrace as his home is a fascinating journey of an art form’s evolution from niche to mainstream. Andre was there, in all his hulking glory, to bridge the gap between pro-wrestling as an outlying stigma-riddled sideshow to a sweeping national phenomenon. And the way his story, as a personal tale of triumph and eventual decline, mirrored the biggest traditional period in the history of the business makes for quite the “truth is stranger than fiction” ride.

The Andre documentary is currently streaming on all HBO platforms.

Kristap Porzingis Believes The Knicks Will Get The Right Coach This Time Around

TheSource Feed - Sun, 04/15/2018 - 12:13pm
It has been a coaching carousel for the New York Knicks for a while now, especially for star power forward Kristaps Porzingis.

Since being selected by the Knicks No. 4 overall in the 2015 NBA Draft, Porzingis is now looking at his fourth head coach in four seasons with New York: Derek Fisher, Kurt Rambis, Jeff Hornacek, and whoever the Knicks decide to hire next.

According to ESPN.com’s Ian Begley, Porzingis expressed confidence in the front office: “The situation is what it is. I’m sure the front office, they will make the right decisions and build something that can go a long way. I think they will make the right decisions, so we have to trust them.”

Porzingis’ issues with the previous regime are well-documented, as he and former team president Phil Jackson reportedly didn’t see eye to eye to the point that Jackson entertained the idea of trading him.

All that seems like water under the bridge now. Porzingis has faith in the new Knicks’ front office management.

Porzingis was limited to 48 games this season, as a torn ACL cut his campaign short. Even so, the 22-year-old was named an All-Star for the first time, and he averaged 22.7 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per contest.

Porzingis will be a restricted free agent in 2019 but could have a $150 million contract extension this summer, which may not happen now because of his season-ending ACL tear. All signs still point to Porzingis being a part of the Knicks’ long term plans.

Nicki Minaj Forgives Quavo For “MotorSport” Fallout

TheSource Feed - Sun, 04/15/2018 - 12:07pm

Nicki Minaj is back, and has been making headlines with the debut of her two new singles Barbie Tingz” and “Chun Li.” In a recent interview with Beats 1 Radio, she revealed she was hurt over the “Motorspot” track that she did with Migos and Cardi B.

Now, it appears things have been settled between Minaj and Quavo. On Friday,  Minaj tweeted “He apologized. Ya’ll can stop torturing him now. The Generous Queen FORGIVES. When he told me what y’all were doing in them comments I fell TF out. Love you guys tho. For LIFE.” Prior to the apology, Minaj revealed to Apple Music that she felt “ambushed” by Quavo.

“With ‘Motorsport’ I kind of felt ambushed,” she explained. “Quavo was my baby. I loved Quavo. At the time, I went on Twitter and I explained how Motorsport came about and people were saying that I was lying. So I texted Quavo and I said, ‘can you back me on this? Cause I don’t want people to think I’m lying and he didn’t back me up. He texted me back like ‘I would go on Twitter and back you up if you were my girl lol and that hurt because I love him. And there are certain rappers that I call my baby- Quavo, Uzi, Swae Lee – and so Quavo told me “I’m not gonna go on Twitter and address that shit. If I do an interview then I’ll address it.’

However, Saturday morning, Nicki Minaj shared a video that further proved that things were good between the two as she was seen hanging out with Quavo, Kylie Jenner, The Weeknd, Travis Scott, and Chance The Rapper at Coachella.

T.I. Boycotts Starbucks Following Racial Controversy

TheSource Feed - Sun, 04/15/2018 - 11:59am

This week, there has been much controversy surrounding an incident that occurred at a Starbucks in Philadelphia. Two Black men were arrested after an employee reported to the police that the men had trespassed. Video clips of the incident showcase other customers protesting and calling the incident uncalled for, as the two men were taken out of the establishment.

The Philadelphia police commissioner, Richard Ross, put out a statement in defense of the situation by saying that the men attempted to use the bathroom, but were told that the bathroom was only available for paying customers. The men then refused to leave Starbucks, after being asked by employees to leave three times. However, sources say that the men were at the shop waiting to meet with someone before ordering.

Ross further stated “ As an African American male, I am very aware of implicit bias; we are committed to fair and unbiased policing, If a business calls and they say that ‘Someone is here that I no longer wish to be in my business,’ now I have a legal obligation to carry out their duties and they did just that. Since the incident, Starbucks has issued an apology for the arrests and the men were immediately released after the company no longer pressed the issue.

People have now called for a #BoycottStarbucks movement and one notable celebrity has joined the cause. T.I. who stands for the movement has had a history of boycotting establishments who discriminate against minorities. “I ain’t spending no more of my bread wit em,” he penned under an Instagram post. “Urge y’ll no to either.”
