Comedian & Producer Louis C.K. Accused of Sexual Misconduct

TheSource Feed - Fri, 11/10/2017 - 2:24pm

Words by Nick Slay

Most people know famed comedian Louis C.K. from his hit television show on FOX owned cable channel FX. After 5 seasons and 2 Primetime Emmy awards, Louie was received as a hit by critics and Louis was easily regarded as a star on the rise. Louis C.K. got his big break due to his longtime friendship with Chris Rock. After a failed stint as a writer for The Dana Carvey Show (which was cancelled after a few episodes on ABC) he called up his good friend and asked if he could still be a writer/producer on The Chris Rock Show on HBO. The comedic late night comedy show garnered Louis an Emmy award for his writing and established him as a major voice in comedy.

Today that career is falling apart at the seams amongst the 5 accusations levied against him by fellow female comedians.

Louis is most known for material dealing with male hypocrisy, so it comes out as a major shocker that he would come under fire for these allegations. Fans of the comedian are all too familiar with his riffs about masturbation, so when the story dropped this news cycle about him masturbating in front of other women in the comedy industry it hit all too close to home. Starting with a shocking story by two then newcomers to the industry, Chicago comedy duo, Dana Min Goodman and Julia Wolov,  who landed their big break at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado in 2002.

Afterwards Louis C.K. invited them back to his hotel room for a nightcap and to celebrate after their late-night show. So elated, they didn’t even think twice. He was a comedian they looked up to, so it was a no brainer  to take him up for his offer. He seemed genuine and sincere they didn’t think anything of it until the conversation took a darker and weirder tone as the night went on. At some point during their visit, allegedly Louis asked if he could show the young women his penis. Thinking it was part of his outlandish humor the two women say they laughed it off. According to accusers, this lead to the comedian showing his his private parts and eventually getting completely naked.

This would be first the first of many recounts of women in the comedy industry claiming that Louis C.K. either masturbated in front of them or could be heard, “doing it” over the phone. As one those times where fact is stranger than fiction, Louis responded to the women’s claims as posted in the New York Times and addressed they, “were all true.” He went on to admit that at the time he didn’t think what he was doing was so wrong because he always asked for permission first. He followed that as he looks back he didn’t appreciate the power he wielded over these women at the time. He now regrets leaving these women to suffer the repercussions of his actions.

R&B Singer Avant Shares Stories Of His Tour In Iraq (Flashback Nov. 2008)

TheSource Feed - Fri, 11/10/2017 - 2:18pm

 Words by Aimstar

From our Nov. 2008 issue, a story about an artists sharing his gifts with our service people.

It’s been a minute since Avant’s last album, Director, hit the shelves in the spring of 2006.

Although relatively understated, the album went gold and did bear a few memorable hits, like the seductive countdown “Four Minutes, and the arrogant bedroom call of “Grown Ass Man” and the sultry duet “Lie About Us,”which featured Pussycat Dolls alum Nicole Scherzinger. He has amassed a steady following of loyal fans over the years, but Avant is not afraid to admit his last four albums to date haven’t warranted the kind of mainstream attention that he deserves . Through it all, he remains somewhat of a soulful street legend, one who has bobbed and weaved through the industry hoopla.  From his early days on Magic Johnson’s eponymous label to a four-year stint on Geffen Records, it took some time before he could find a label home that he believes considers him a priority.

“It was time for a new beginning, a new look,” Avant remembers, referring to his decision to jump onto Capitol Records. “And I really like the company right here because they are trying to take me places as far as my talent that I have never been.” It’s obvious when the charismatic 30 year-old speaks of where he’s been, that he finally knows where he’s going.

Just a few months ago, Avant and company traveled across the Atlantic to visit troops deployed to Iraq, where he spent most of his time in safe quarters or spending the night at one of the former palaces of Saddam Hussein. “I was there for 10 days. We were just basically going around to different spots, like the mess halls where everyone eats, to the hospital, off base to a spot that was really still hot with war….I wanted to be there. I wanted to take in the whole experience.” While there the Ohio native also visited a number of US military bases, where he went beyond the call of duty by granting special performances for soldiers who were on deck. And in support of their efforts, he even invited a few on stage. “When I performed in Kuwait, i met a few artist and let them on stage to sing “Don’t Say No, Just Say Yes.” There were some people that really had talent. It’s just that they just chose a different route.”

The trip afforded Avant memorable moments with the troops, although he didn’t get experience the shooting range as he would have liked. But there were some somber times as well. “The next morning we went to Baghdad. It was like 115 degrees during the day. But [when] I did the show, you could see it in their eyes that they were thinking about the things that were going on in their lives. It was really deep when you think about the nature of war. [And] I’m just ready for the troops to come home honestly.”

A calm Avant has since returned from the war zone. Wearing jeans, a white tee and a red leather motorcycle jacket, today the humble singer is standing at the edge of the stage atop the Capitol Records building in Manhattan’s trendy Chelsea neighborhood. And as industry heads gather around for the special chocolate themed summer evening performance, and he belts out a few songs from his forthcoming fifth album, Avant, they clamor to get closer to him. Avant has fought hard to get here in many ways. But it’s not the fighter that we see on stage, or the director or the songwriter he has become over the years. Instead we find a new man in Avant, who is ready to take on the challenges of the world and who now understands why he’s had to work so hard to get this far.

His reality has never been so sweet.

Who’s Next? List of Hollywood’s Accused Sexual Offenders Grows Daily

TheSource Feed - Fri, 11/10/2017 - 1:55pm

Words by Leslie Monet

A domino effect has rippled across Hollywood and the media since women (and men, including actor Terry Crews) have become empowered, spearheading a movement to address numerous sexual assault allegations of prominent individuals.  After the vast amount of testimonies alleging sexual misconduct of Harvey Weinstein, on top of the viral #MeToo movement, it seems almost daily the list continues to proliferate.

Not in any particular order besides industry, here’s the latest of the alleged perpetrators, after Weinstein:

Louis CK- Comedian/Filmmaker
Ben Afleck-Actor
George W. Bush Sr-Former President
Kevin Spacey – Actor
James Toback – Hollywood Screenwriter
Chris Savino – Creator of Nickelodeon’s “The Loud House”
Roy Price – Head of Amazon Studios
John Besh – Celebrity Chef
Mark Halperin – ABC News Journalist
Micheal Oreskes – Top Editor at NPR (National Public Radio)
Lockhart Steele – Editorial Director at Vox Media
Adam Venit – Head Agent of motion picture group WME
Steven Seagal – Actor
Charlie Sheen – Actor
Jeremy Piven – “Entourage” Actor
Ed Westwick – “Gossip Girl” Actor
Dustin Hoffman – Oscar-winning Actor
Matthew Weiner – Creator of AMC’s “Mad Men”
Andy Dick – Former “NewsRadio” star/Actor
Brett Ratnor – “Rush Hour” Producer/Director
David Blaine – Magician
David Guillod – “Atomic Blonde” Producer
Robert Knepper – “Transporter 3” Actor
John Singleton – Oscar-nominated Director

Unhonorable-mention to Harvey Weinstein’s brother, Bob Weinstein, who is under investigation for sexually harassing Spike TV “The Mist” showrunner Amanda Segel.

Obviously, this list in not all inclusive as the allegations continue to flood authorities’ desks daily. At this point, one would surely be concerned how this widespread scandal is going to be monitored for future transgressions against up-and-coming professionals in film industry or other high profile positions.  With a majority of the reports filed in the Hollywood area, the LAPD is set to form a task force specifically investigating sexual misconduct allegations. Also, on December 1st, Women In Film group is rolling out a sexual harassment Help Line and pro bono legal services for those in entertainment who’ve encountered misconduct in the past. The help line will be open 365 days.

Salute to Our Veterans: Hip-Hop Inside Iraq (Flashback 2008)

TheSource Feed - Fri, 11/10/2017 - 1:31pm

Words by Aimstar & SFC Lawrence C. Bush

Flashback to Veteran’s Day Nov. 2008, when The Source profiled 6 service people sacrificing to keep us safe.  We are thankful to those that protect and serve, we also inspired by their commitment to life to life, liberty and love of Hip-Hop.

Shawn Yeager RANK: SPC (Specialist)  Age:21

I was born in New Jersey. My favorite group is the Dip Set. While I’m here in Iraq, I like to sit and write rhymes and would love to make it in the Hip-Hop industry. Hip-Hop music motivates me at work and relieves the stress of my deployment. It’s my outlet down here. And when I get out the Army, I plan on pursuing my music one day down the line.

Jason “J-Kidd” Jackson RANK: SPC (Specialist) Age:24

I was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, and for as long as I can remember, music has been my therapy. From writing song or just playing some of my favorite artist like Jay-Z and Lupe[Fiasco], it keeps me motivated when i’m feeling down. Before I joined the army, I would look around my community, and see a lot of people getting killed or going to jail. So I decided to go active to better my chances of success and to get money for school. If it wasn’t for music, I don’t think that I would’ve made it through the last 15 months because being in Iraq for that long is not only dangerous, but it’s also very stressful. I plan to use the GI Bill to get a degree in accounting at the University of Illinois at Chicago [when I get back].[And then] I hope to focus on starting my own record label and living out my dream of becoming a rapper and CEO.

Lawrence Clinton Bush RANK: SFC (Sergeant First Class)  Age:39

My name is Lawrence Clinton Bush Jr, born July 6, 1969. Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, my mother would buy an album every payday and we would sit and listen to the latest songs. There were times when my friends and I would go to the Kinsman Bar and Grill and watch the Kinsman jazz band rehearse until it was late. Those experiences exposed me to many genres of music.

With 16 years of service in the US military, Hip-Hop it’s culture influences me in may ways. Everyone has a story to tell and if I could, I would have a world wide listening party.

During my first Iraq tour, I would listen to artist like DMX or “Rock Box” by Run-DMC to get hyped before a mission. For this Iraq tour, I use Hip-Hop to remind me that after this 15 month tour, I will be able to sit back in privacy and listen to my music freely. I have been working with Kim Page of str8uptalented.com, a website for artist looking to jumpstart a career in entertainment. Once my Army is over, I will be venturing into the world of Hip-Hop full-time, so be on the look out!

Jermaine Goodman RANK: LT ( First Lieutenant)  Age:24

I’m a 24 year old talented singer/songwriter/musician from Gates County, North Carolina, who is currently deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I began my musical career in my local church choir. I joined the US Army where I excelled in three consecutive Military Idol Competitions—in 2006 at Fort Leonard Wood, runner up; in 2007 at Vilseck, German Rose Barracks, first place winner: and in 2008 in Mosul, Iraq, second place winner. I now live in Vilseck, Germany, and have performed anywhere there is a microphone and a piano available to me.

As a soldier in Iraq you really do not have a lot of space. Usually, there are four-man rooms and our commanders attempt to shove eight people in them at times! Nevertheless, for 15 entire months I managed to set up zx keyboards, a USB microphone, a laptop and another computer screen, all on top of my wall locker. In addition to that equipment, I had an acoustic guitar shipped to Iraq that I attempted to learn how to play, but it just collected dust.

As for my recording of my album Letters From Iraq, lights out was usually at 0100 or 0200. My roommates understood that I needed to continue recording until 0300 or 0400 some nights. if you listen closely to “Baby It’s Your Birthday—Part 1,” you may hear someone in the background yell, “WOOOO” as I attempted to sing in Spanish!

In Iraq, everyone needs an outlet to release the stress of incoming artillery shells and IEDs/EFPs [Improvised Explosively Formed Projectiles]. I’m thankful that God and my love for making music helped me cope through the hardest 15 months of my life.

Jesse James Jamison RANK: SGT (Sergeant)  Age:26

My name is Jesse James Jamison Jr. aka Fojay Tha Phantaztik. I was born in Albany, New York and moved to Jacksonville, North Carolina, at the age of eight. I have been making Hip-Hop music for about 13 years now, dating back to the 7th grade when I when I wrote my first rhyme. I used to write and freestyle to instrumentals at parties and once I graduated high school, I purchased my first drum machine and I have been grinding out beats since. Just a few of my musical influences are the RZA , Pete Rock, Kanye West, Timbaland and too many to hers to name. After graduating from high school, I was really going nowhere, but remaining positive, I enlisted into the United States Army.

I am still working on my music. Along with longtime childhood friend Lamar Person, we plan to start our own production label and be the next super producers in the music industry.

I have served my country for seven years in numerous duty stations around the world from Korea to Iraq and at the same time I’ve been able to tell my story through music , with songs like ”3 Peez” and “War Storeez.” Music has been a way for me to keep away from trouble and get all the stress and things I need to express off my chest.

When I have time to record while serving in Iraq, I use my laptop, Cool Edit Pro, a small Phantom power mixer with condenser mic and a MC -8o8. I will always make music by any means.

Jared Roach RANK: SPC (Specialist)  Age:21

My name is Jared Roach. I am 21 years-old. I was born and raised in North Dakota and have been listening to Hip-Hop music for as long as I can remember. I joined the Army about 18 months ago to help fight the War on Terror. I was deployed to Iraq 13 months ago. After II get out the military, I plan on going to college to pursue a career in politics. I’ve been exposed to Hip-Hop music much more since I’ve been in the Army, and the music has really kept me motivated through the tougher times here. Whenever I get a chance at work I put on my headphones, I turn on some Hip-Hop and just relax, Hip-Hop keeps me motivated at the gym too. Music will always be a part of my life and I know that as long as I’m listening to music, I will always be listening to Hip-Hop.

Eminem Releases New Song “Walk on Water” Featuring Beyonce

TheSource Feed - Fri, 11/10/2017 - 12:27pm

After a two-day teaser, Eminem released a Beyonce-assisted track called “Walk on Water”.

The unexpectedly mellow track consists of a simple piano beat, a haunting string section, and the Queen Bey on the hook. It’s roughly cut and you can hear pen scribbles and Em swearing to himself in between verses.

In an initial Instagram post, the song’s title was written on a prescription note with a logo with Eminem’s signature backwards E for Revival, which is presumably the name of his forthcoming album. There is no tentative date for the LP, but it’s expected to arrive by next year. The “Rap God” rapper’s manager, Paul Rosenberg teased the name of the album last month in a fake advertising campaign.

Maybe we’ll get more information about the album during Em’s Saturday Night Live appearance. Until then, listen to the record above.

Olympic Gymnast Aly Raisman Says USA Team Doctor Sexually Assaulted Her

TheSource Feed - Fri, 11/10/2017 - 12:13pm

Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman says she is among the young women sexually abused by a former USA Gymnastics team doctor.

Raisman tells “60 Minutes” she was 15 when she was first treated by Dr. Larry Nassar, who spent more than two decades working with athletes at USA Gymnastics. He’s now is in jail in Michigan awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to possession of child pornography.

Raisman, the captain of the 2012 and 2016 Olympic gold-medal winning teams, details the abuse in her book “Fierce,” which will be released on Tuesday. Raisman’s interview with “60 Minutes” will air on Sunday night.

Raisman is the latest gymnast to claim she was sexually abused by Nassar. McKayla Maroney, who won two medals at the 2012 Games as Raisman’s teammate, said last month she was molested for years by Nassar.

Nassar also is awaiting trial on separate criminal sexual conduct charges and has been sued by more than 125 women alleging sexual abuse. Nassar has pleaded not guilty to the assault charges, and the dozens of civil suits filed in Michigan are currently in mediation.

USA Gymnastics said in a statement Friday that Raisman sharing her personal experience took “great courage” and it is “appalled by the conduct of which Larry Nassar is accused.”

The 23-year-old Raisman has been highly critical of USA Gymnastics in recent months, calling for leadership change at the top of the organization while advocating for athlete’s rights.

Raisman declined to get into specifics at that time about whether she was abused by Nassar but painted a vivid picture of how Nassar’s behavior went unchecked.

“I think that, you just want, you want to trust people and that he was just a disgusting person, he took advantage of so many people’s trust,” Raisman said. “And I think, it just disgusts me he was a doctor. It’s crazy. Because when a doctor says something you want to believe him and it’s just awful.”

Jamie Dantzscher, a bronze medalist on the 2000 U.S. Olympic team, filed a lawsuit against Nassar in California in September 2016. She says Nassar touched her inappropriately while disguising the abuse as treatment. Dantzscher initially filed as “Jane Doe” but came forward publicly to “60 Minutes” in February.

USA Gymnastics announced Tuesday it hired Kerry Perry as the organization’s new president and CEO. Perry starts on Dec. 1.

Double Standard: Meek Mill Locked Up, Michael Flynn Still Free

TheSource Feed - Fri, 11/10/2017 - 12:10pm

Picture this: An American political figure works on a presidential campaign— one of the most crucial ones of the century. He works with his puppet candidate to secure a spot in the White House and works even harder to build international relationship to undergird the policy and agenda set forth by his candidate. His candidate wins the election under a cloud of suspicion and appoints him as the National Security Advisor. This figure secretly meets with a senior Turkish official weeks before this unpopular president-elect is inaugurated into the highest seat in the free world. Imagine that the meeting is to discuss a quid pro quo where said security advisor would promise to be paid to do the dirty work for the government of Turkey. He accepts the directive… dun…dun… dun….  Sounds dramatic, right? Seems like a twisted spy movie plot, right? Woefully, it is not. This is drama courtesy of our new administration is live and direct.

While the Hip-Hop world signs petition to get battle-rapper turned superstar, Meek Mill out of jail, the double standards of the American legal system bleeds out in the most embarrassing way.   Meek Mill gets knocked for popping a wheeling on his bike, but former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn is out here “allegedly” carrying out directors from Ankara from a comfy spot in the White House, sources have revealed.

Individuals who support Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s interference in last year’s presidential election recently questioned witness about a supposed meeting between Flynn and several high-ranking Turkish official last December. For these investigators, they were curious about Flynn’s repetitive lobbying on behalf of Turkey.

According to The Wall Street Journal, folk familiar with the investigation believe Mueller is checking out whether or not Flynn discussed in the aforementioned meeting setting up the return to Turkey of a chief rival of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan who currently resides in the U.S. Others with inside information have said investigators are examining whether Flynn and other people in authority discussed ways to free a Turkish-Iranian gold trader, Reza Zarrab, who is jailed in the U.S. Zarrab and is facing federal charges that he helped Iran skirt U.S. sanctions.

It seems that there are two standards when it comes down to protection under the law.

There are folk mangled up in treasonous activities chilling in the White House (even though Michael Flynn is gone don’t think he was acting alone) who are given the benefit of the doubt in regards of their innocence and those who are immediately met with the harsh hands of the law. Some people get a slap on the wrist and traffic and vehicular violations are enough to destroy a man’s career and possibly his life.

We will be watching this story closely.

Twitter Stops Verification Process After Charlottesville White Supremacist Gets Blue Check

TheSource Feed - Fri, 11/10/2017 - 11:14am

On Thursday, Twitter announced that they will be “pausing” their verification system to re-evaluate their process after coming under fire for verifying the account of Jason Kessler, the leader of Unite the Right and organizer of the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., in August.

In a statement released on its Twitter Support account, the company said, “Verification was meant to authenticate identity & voice but it is interpreted as an endorsement or an indicator of importance. We recognize that we have created this confusion and need to resolve it. We have paused all general verifications while we work and will report back soon.”

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey posted a similar note about their verification system, saying, “We should’ve communicated faster on this (yesterday): our agents have been following our verification policy correctly, but we realized some time ago the system is broken and needs to be reconsidered. And we failed by not doing anything about it. Working now to fix faster.”

The popular social media platform that’s home to 330 million active users (and is the preferred outlet for President Trump) grants verification to users they deem to be authentic. Twitter is well within their right to choose who should and who should not be verified according to their standards.

Joshua Vs Wilder, Boxing’s Next Mega Fight Coming In 2018

TheSource Feed - Fri, 11/10/2017 - 10:16am

The boxing match most want to see, seems likely in 2018.

IBF and WBA champion Anthony Joshua will face WBC champ Deantay Wilder, according to Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn.

I’m sitting down with [Wilder’s representatives] Shelly Finkel and Al Haymon later this week to have our first conversations regarding Joshua vs Wilder. Like all these big fights it’s never easy but hopefully we can find somewhere between reality and fantasy that suits all.

The WBA and IBF champion Joshua, defended his belts against Carlos Takam in Cardiff and has now set his sights on unifying the heavyweight division. Wilder and New Zealander Joseph Parker hold the other two titles with a clash against the American now looking increasingly likely sooner rather than later.

Following his brutal knockout win over Bermane Stiverne, the Bronze Bomber declared “war” on the Brit before accusing Hearn of ducking the fight.

Wilder is not the only fighter targeting a bout with IBF and WBA champion Joshua. Joseph Parker (24-0, 18 KOs) has also made Joshua his primary target, and Hearn insists that Joshua intends to fight both to unify the division in 2018.

“I had a good meeting with AJ [on Tuesday],” said Hearn. “It’s his goal to try and become undisputed heavyweight champion of the world by the close of 2018 so, at present, to do that we must go through Parker and Wilder.”

All things point to an epic 2018 for the sport of boxing.

Remy Ma on Nicki Minaj: I’m Over That, I’m Past That

TheSource Feed - Fri, 11/10/2017 - 9:43am

On Thursday, (Nov. 10th) Remy Ma stopped by The Breakfast Club and sat down with DJ Envy, Angela Yee, and Charlamagne and went on a straight up debunking session.

“I’m over that, I’m past that,” Remy defines her stance with her most talked about circumstance with rival-in-rap, Nicki Minaj and clarifies the rumor about her new single with rap legend Lil’ Kim, “Wake Me Up” being centered around Minaj.

Speaking of the identity of the new and improved Remy Ma, while praising Laila’s Wisdom emcee Rapsody, the rap queen is apparently not concerned about how any other female rapper feels about her style.

I don’t sit around and focus on females when I make music and when I write because I want to be great overall.

Under the notion of being an emcee, she “wants the JAY-Zs, Kendricks, Coles, and Ems” to be the ones listening and judging her records.

Showing gratitude towards her multi-million dollar contract with Columbia, she tells how the deal has changed her life, along with her choice of obtaining new management under the guards of Tamar Braxton’s now estranged husband, Vince Herbert.

The Bronx emcee’s reign as the star of hit reality show Love & Hip Hop New York is just a nimble for her, but she appreciates being able to showcase her bearings such as her strong relationship with her husband, Papoose, and minimal beefs – as the show is infamous for displaying.

Remy also speaks about the status of her highly anticipated album 7 Winters & 6 Summers, which is said to be anchored at being complete. The album will pick up on the experience of her six-year sentencing, with an aim shooting at those who have faced the same or similar struggle.

When you go through something like that, its traumatizing. I spent most of my adult life in prison and I became the person I am now because of what I went through and when I speak about it, it’s not because I’m proud of it or because I’m bragging about it. It’s like, I wanna help you not go through this.

“Drunk” O.J. Simpson Kicked Out Of Cosmopolitan Las Vegas Hotel

TheSource Feed - Fri, 11/10/2017 - 9:29am

OJ Simpson has been out of prison for more than a month, and he’s not exactly being a model parolee, according to TMZ. Sources tell the website that Simpson was chucked out of the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas for being drunk and belligerent. According to TMZ sources, Simpson “was angry at hotel staff and glasses broke at the bar,” though he behaved himself when security arrived to escort him out. Simpson is now apparently permanently banned from the hotel, though his lawyer, Malcolm LaVergne, says it was nothing to do with his client’s behavior. He claims the hotel decided to ban Simpson even before he arrived.

“Cosmopolitan exercised its right to issue a trespass notice,” LaVergne said in a statement. “Any private property in Nevada has the right to tell any person that you are trespassing and please don’t come back; if you come back you are subject to a misdemeanor arrest.” If Simpson was drunk, he could be in violation of parole terms, though a witness says that Simpson abstained while other members of his party drank wine. LaVergne says Simpson was neither drunk nor belligerent and only tends to have one drink when he is socializing, WXYZ reports. (Since his release from prison, Simpson has been signing autographs and living in a friend’s Las Vegas mansion.)

Lupita Nyong’o Calls Out Grazia For Photoshopping Her Kinky Coils

TheSource Feed - Fri, 11/10/2017 - 8:36am

Lupita Nyong’o thought she was granted a chance to unapologetically show women who share her alike features the power of their beauty when she graced the cover of UK fashion/beauty magazine Grazia, only to find the publication distort her image into a more “Eurocentric” impression.

Disappointed that @GraziaUK edited out & smoothed my hair to fit a more Eurocentric notion of what beautiful hair looks like. #dtmh pic.twitter.com/10UUScS7Xo

— Lupita Nyong'o (@Lupita_Nyongo) November 10, 2017

The Kenyan-Mexican actress called out Grazia on social media after her rather impressionably intriguing interview with the magazine was published, exposing the before and after photos on Instagram, showing the cover before her kinky slick backed ponytail was photoshopped, out.

Being featured on the cover of a magazine fulfills me as it is an opportunity to show other dark, kinky-haired people, and particularly our children, that they are beautiful just the way they are. I am disappointed that Grazia invited me to be on their cover and then edited out and smoothed my hair to fit their notion of what beautiful hair looks like.

As I have made clear so often in the past with every fiber of my being, I embrace my natural heritage and despite having grown up thinking light skin and straight, silky hair were the standards of beauty, I now know that my dark skin and kinky, coily hair are beautiful too. Being featured on the cover of a magazine fulfills me as it is an opportunity to show other dark, kinky-haired people, and particularly our children, that they are beautiful just the way they are. I am disappointed that @graziauk invited me to be on their cover and then edited out and smoothed my hair to fit their notion of what beautiful hair looks like. Had I been consulted, I would have explained that I cannot support or condone the omission of what is my native heritage with the intention that they appreciate that there is still a very long way to go to combat the unconscious prejudice against black women's complexion, hair style and texture. #dtmh

Eons ago, Lupita has divulged the pride she has for her indigenous roots without any form of resistance and since, has become a staple in the world of fashion and beauty notably, for black women. Such energy transpires from her experience growing up with the global standard of beauty being on the “Eurocentric” roundabout, which attempts to downplay the visage of black women.

Lupita made it clear that if she knew the publication was going to bargain her appearance and dispose of any bit of her afro features, her decision on how or to even do the cover, would have been different.

Had I been consulted, I would have explained that I cannot support or condone the omission of what is my native heritage with the intention that they appreciate that there is still a very long way to go to combat the unconscious prejudice against black women’s complexion, hair style and texture.

Interesting enough, Lupita’s interview with Grazia appears to set a tone focus on her deeds in Hollywood and the beauty/fashion industry, such as her Harvey Weinstein expose and viral Rihanna flick, along with her iconic presence in the culture of fashion, beauty, and film.

It was also noted Nyong’o made history as the first black actress to become an ambassador for luxurious skin care and makeup line Lancome and she is among the few amount of black actresses to win an Oscar, earned from her fetching performance in 12 Years A Slave.

Comparatively, last month, Solange Knowles called out Evening Standard Magazine for airbrushing her blatant Afrocentric hairstyle as she made the cover for their October issue.

Canadian Restaurant Hires Only HIV Positive Employees

TheSource Feed - Fri, 11/10/2017 - 7:10am

It’s no secret that there is a huge stigma against those infected with HIV, but how much information do we really lack about the disease as a whole? A pop-up restaurant in Toronto, Canada called June’s HIV+ Eatery, decided to put an end to the uneducated misrepresentation of HIV by opening the world’s first eatery, staffed by all HIV positive chefs. That’s right; each employee is in fact infected with the disease. The restaurant’s goal is to show people that HIV is not as easily transmitted as some may think, especially not through food.

“For many people living with HIV, it’s the stigma that hurts the most. June’s HIV+ Eatery is an opportunity to fight stigma with every bite. To come together in a show of love, support and acceptance, and to dispel the myths about HIV that condemn so many to suffer in silence,” stated in the press release.

The staff consists of 14 chefs who wore aprons with bold phrases like “judge the cooking, not the cook”, “think you can get HIV from food? Bite me” and “I got HIV from pasta. Said no one.” Thanks to Toronto’s specialty HIV and AIDS hospital, Casey’s House; June was able to have their grand opening on November 7 and November 8 with sold out seats both nights. Each seat cost $125 which included a four- course dinner. The idea for this pop-up restaurant came after a recent study found that half of Canadians said, “They wouldn’t knowingly eat or share food prepared by someone who is HIV positive.”

“The most common misconception about this disease is that many believe it can be transmitted through skin-to-skin touch, saliva, or by sharing glasses or cutlery.” Joanne Simons, CEO of Casey House said. “The numbers are kind of staggering, but it wasn’t overly surprising. For the clients that Casey House serves, that stigma is very real on a very daily basis.”

This is a very controversial topic, with more people against it then for it. Hopefully this action can actually help educate us all on HIV, and provide more comfort in situations that involve HIV positive and negative patrons.

Checked Inn Shows That Brooklyn Is In The House

TheSource Feed - Fri, 11/10/2017 - 12:53am

Brooklyn is always in the house…

And this time, the house (that is the place to be) is in Brooklyn. Tuesday, November 21st at 10pm, Oprah Winfrey’s OWN meets with Bedstuy’s queen moguless, Monique Greenwood with her new show “Checked Inn”. Checked Inn is a docu-series that gives viewers a peek into the Greenwood’s Akwaaba properties.

What is Akwaaba?

Akwaaba Bed & Breakfast Inns (located in Central Brooklyn) is the most successful B&B business on the east coast, while Awkaaba’s Mansion at Noble Lane (in the Poconos, PA) is cozy get away for couples that are exhausted by the hustle and bustle of life’s challenges. And the show, uses the two spots as a new experience to see how a little loving touch can go a long way; something that Greenwood picked up through years of servicing Black and Brown people as an entrepreneur and the Editor in Chief of Essence Magazine.

At Essence Magazine, Greenwood had a reputation of knowing how to curate the Black experience in a way like no other.

She took that feminine touch and applied it to the many real-estate properties in Brooklyn that she owned and grandmothered in about a dozen of young business owners looking to take their Brooklyn swag and create community. A few years back businesses like Brownstone Books, Bread Stuy, Bread Love BKNY thrived under her mentorship and now Peaches and other fancy-pants merchants, who consider this area as SOLA (Shops of Lewis Ave), all look to Greenwood as the successful model (even calling her landlord) in the service area.

Checked Inn is this next level for her. Hospitality on deck, we’ll see if she can translate her influence on the small screen.

Massive Power Outage Threatens Puerto Rico Recovery

TheSource Feed - Thu, 11/09/2017 - 4:39pm

A colossal power outage has wiped out power to Puerto Rico’s capital San Juan. The cause of the huge issue is a primary transmission line failure according to Fernando Padilla, an official with the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority.

Power generation was at over 40% of capacity yet plummeted to 18% on Wednesday. A majority of Puerto Rico has been powerless since Hurricane Maria ravaged the island on September 20.

The downed power line was repaired previously by Whitefish Energy, a Montana firm recently under fire for a $300 million contract to restore power on the island. The deal was later canceled by the Puerto Rico government.

Anyone Comics Presents “The Nation’s Respected” Graff Show (RECAP)

TheSource Feed - Thu, 11/09/2017 - 4:33pm

This past weekend in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, some of the borough’s most legendary graffiti artists and enthusiasts gathered under one roof at Anyone Comics Store for the TNR CREW graff show aptly titled, “The Nation’s Respected”.

Walk past the rows of new and used DC and Marvel comic books to the stairs to the basement, where arguably one of the most authentic graff exhibits displayed in the city in the past five years occurred and you’ll still find the remnants on the walls of such a monumental show. With DJ Roger Smith spinning classic hits from TNR’s hey day, the bar pumping $5 top shelf mixers and black books getting smashed, it was definitely a night to be remembered.

Salute to the writers who came out including EASY, TEKAY TNR, RUDY LO TNR, KIES, TREASE 7HOODS, CHINO BYI, KARMA KIW, TRAP IF, SEV TDT, BYE F.U.C.K. CREW, POEST, ZA OGM, PAPO DTF, ERA UK, ELSE KGB and anyone else who was in the building that was not mentioned.

Lin Manuel Miranda Is Bringing ‘Hamilton’ To Puerto Rico

TheSource Feed - Thu, 11/09/2017 - 4:13pm

Lin Manuel Miranda is bringing the universally acclaimed musical play Hamilton: An American Musical to his storm battered homeland of Puerto Rico. Set to be staged at the island’s capital city of San Juan, Lin Manuel will reprise his role as Alexander Hamilton, returning to the show after ending his stint on Broadway in July 2016.

According to NPR, Miranda is hopeful that the play’s new location will demonstrate to the world at large the island’s ability to recover after tragedy has struck in the form of Hurricane Maria.

“When I last visited the island, a few weeks before Hurricane Maria,” Miranda stated in a press release, “I had made a commitment to not only bring the show to Puerto Rico but also return again to the title role. In the aftermath of Maria, we decided to expedite the announcement of the project to send a bold message that Puerto Rico will recover and be back in business, stronger than ever.”

Hamilton is set to take place at the University of Puerto Rico’s campus from January 8th-27th. A lottery will be developed for $10 Hamilton seats for those unable to afford the exorbitant price of admission. Miranda’s show, a bonafide national hit originally launched in New York City to huge avail.
