Cynthia Nixon: Marijuana is “Effectively Legal” For White People

TheSource Feed - Thu, 04/12/2018 - 8:20am

Cynthia Nixon’s campaign for governor continues with her latest video about why she supports legalizing the use of recreational marijuana in New York.

“There are a lot of good reasons for legalizing marijuana, but for me, it comes down to this: We have to stop putting people of color in jail for something that white people do with impunity,” said Nixon in a video posted on Twitter Wednesday.

Nixon, who in March announced her run against incumbent governor Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming Democratic primary, notes in the video that 80 percent of New Yorkers arrested for marijuana are black or Latino.

“The simple truth is, for white people, the use of marijuana has effectively been legal for a long time,” she says. “Isn’t it time we legalize it for everybody else?”

A lot of you have been asking about my position on marijuana. Here it is. pic.twitter.com/iEKLHgClFN

— Cynthia Nixon (@CynthiaNixon) April 11, 2018

While Nixon has spoken out about recreational legalization in New York before, this discussion on how it correlates to the issue of racial inequality is particularly refreshing and needed.

The gubernatorial candidate and former actress goes on to say in her campaign video that white people and people of color use marijuana at roughly the same rates. Yet black people in New York are arrested or detained for marijuana 4.5 times more than white people, according to a report by the ACLU.

The 52-year-old also says that legalizing would “generate millions of dollars in tax revenue” and “create new agricultural opportunities for New York’s farmers.”

Currently, eight other states and Washington, D.C., have legalized marijuana for recreational use. New York state does have a medical marijuana program, though it is extremely restrictive.

Nixon is slated to challenge Cuomo in the Democratic primary on Sept. 13.

New York Knicks Fire Head Coach Jeff Hornacek

TheSource Feed - Thu, 04/12/2018 - 8:14am

As the NBA regular season comes to an end, The New York Knicks are already looking in a new direction as head coach Jeff Hornacek was fired early Thursday morning. Following his return to New York after a 110-98 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers last night, James Dolan and the Knicks organization informed the former Utah Jazz shooting guard that he will not be returning for the last year that was on his contract according to a report by ESPN.

Some early head coaching options for the Knicks according to ESPN’s league sources are Former Grizzlies coach David Fizdale, former Cleveland Cavaliers coach David Blatt and former Golden State Warriors Head Coach and former Knicks Point Guard Mark Jackson.

Jackson seems to be the early favorite for Knicks fans as a former star player for the team as well as coaching the Golden State Warriors team that would win the NBA Finals one year after his departure. Jackson was largely responsible for the success of the team and was inexplicably let go after a 50 win season with the then up-and-coming roster.

Since taking over as head coach two seasons ago, Hornacek won 60 games and lost 104 which is good for sixth worst over that stretch according to ESPN. The Knicks finished this season 29-53, good for 11th place in the Eastern Conference. More front office changes are expected from the Knicks during this offseason as the franchise has struggled to put the pieces together to make the playoffs.

The Knicks were without star center Kristaps Porzingis for a lot of the season after he tore his ACL in early February which led to a string of losses.

Forever Young : Vince Carter Returning For His 21st NBA Season

TheSource Feed - Thu, 04/12/2018 - 7:40am

Vince Carter is on a mission to beat father time. Carter told Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated that he plans on playing in the NBA next season, which will be his 21st year in the league.

“I plan on coming back next season. I plan on coming back one more season.” Carter said. “I’m almost 90 percent sure that’s it after next season.”

Kings forward @mrvincecarter15 tells @TheUndefeated that he is playing next season. But will the 41-year-old play longer? In his final @TheUndefeated diary, the 20-year NBA vet answers that & talks Stephon Clark, @PMcCaw0 injury, his off-season job & more. https://t.co/mspyfDRHyo

— Marc J. Spears (@MarcJSpearsESPN) April 11, 2018

Carter is already the oldest player in the league currently and he will turn 42 in January. The eight-time All-Star is averaging 17.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists over his career. After being drafted by the Golden State Warriors with the No. 5 pick in 1998, Carter was immediately traded to the Toronto Raptors for Antawn Jamison.

He will be an unrestricted free agent this Summer and it’s unclear whether he’ll return as a veteran presence for the Kings, or possibly go north of the border to finish his career where it all started with the Toronto Raptors.

Carter averaged 5.3 points and 17.6 minutes per game this season while shooting 39.6% from the field and 34% from three.

If Carter does return next season, he will likely join Dirk Nowitzki as the only other member of the 1998 draft class to still be in the league.

Markelle Fultz Is Now The Youngest Player in NBA History With A Triple-Double

TheSource Feed - Thu, 04/12/2018 - 7:28am

After a devastating shoulder injury that kept the Philadelphia 76ers rookie off the hardwood for the majority of the season, Markelle Fultz has netted his first career triple-double in the final game of the regular season. At age 19, he’s the youngest player in history to do so.

At 19 years old and 317 days, Fultz takes over a record that was held by current Los Angeles Lakers rookie point guard Lonzo Ball who was 20-years-old when he set the record. Fultz finished last night’s win over the Milwaukee Bucks with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists.

“To see his teammates react to Markelle Fultz was special,” 76ers coach Brett Brown told ESPN. “I think it’s a snapshot of who these guys are.” The Sixers will start their playoff run against the 6th seed Miami Heat on Saturday.

Look at how Markelle Fultz’s teammates react to his triple double. They genuinely love the kid. Heart-warming stuff. #Sixers pic.twitter.com/V73AEOZenW

— Brandon Lee Gowton (@BrandonGowton) April 12, 2018

The former University of Washington Husky’s new record surely will be something of a boost going into the postseason as the 76ers look to have a real shot at going to the finals this year with a declining Cavaliers team. The Sixers finish the regular season with 52 wins and 30 losses.

Fultz missed 68 games this season due to a shoulder injury. His return this season was a surprise to many after training videos revealed how severely the number one overall pick in this year’s draft was damaged. Fultz was seen struggling with his shooting form, throwing up awkward looking jump shots. Not long after these videos were posted, Fultz was cleared to return to action and now seems to be an asset, not a liability, to this scorching hot team that is finishing the regular season on a 16 game win streak.

One Coachella Weekend, Three Major New Artists to Catch

TheSource Feed - Thu, 04/12/2018 - 7:09am

As Coachella gears up for its opening weekend, there’s a great deal of hype around the major headliners: Eminem, Beyoncé, Cardi B, Post Malone, and other big names. In their superstar shadows, the music festival is also a gold mine for other lesser-known talented hip-hop artists on the come up.

Some major acts to watch for during the event this weekend include:

Kali Uchis: Fusing jazz, hip-hop, reggae, and R&B with her native Columbian flavor, Kali Uchis has collaborated with major artists such as Snoop Dogg, Gorillaz’, Diplo, Tyler the Creator, Kaytranada, Lana Del Rey, and others. Her Coachella performance, which will take place on Friday, April 13, comes exactly a week after the release of her highly-anticipated and critically acclaimed album, Isolation, where she was favorably compared to Outkast due to her range of diverse sounds.

TroyBoi: Putting his own British spin on trap music, the London-based rapper started out remixing rap, R&B, electro-house, and pop tracks before releasing work under his own name. The native of South East London, England arrived during the early 2010s and is most frequently for his most popular collaboration, “Afterhours,” featuring Nina Sky and Diplo. It seamlessly combines trap and house music making for a hypnotic banger. Other jams such as “Do You?” and “OG” take from Middle Eastern and EDM influences, a talent that few other artists can boast. TroyBoi performs on Friday, April 13.

Flatbush Zombies: Another group whose album, Vacation in Hell, just dropped last week, Flatbush Zombies are arguably one of the most talented, yet underrated names in hip-hop today. The group manages to lay down some of the most complex lyrics over a mixture of club beats, trap hop, gospel, and battle-rap influences and bring an energy that’s sure to get the crowd going Saturday, April 14, when they perform at the festival.

Can’t make it to California? No problem. The festival will be streaming live via Youtube. Stay tuned for weekend two’s preview as well!

The second annual Love and Harmony cruise was one to remember. There were headline performances by Beres Hammond, Beenie Man, Elephant Man, Mr. Vegas, Sanchez, Marcia Griffiths, Rupee, Kevin Lyttle, and many more artists.

Miss2Bees caught up with iconic soca artist Rupee and he opened up about losing both his parents to HIV/AIDs:

“Talking about it publicly first for me was one of the biggest hurdles because their battles came at a time when the public wasn’t well educated about it. It was an immediate assumption that everyone that had AIDS was homo sexual. Unfortunately you know in the Caribbean culture, homophobia is a huge part of the culture.”

Vic Mensa Performs at Hometown Chicago AT&T Flagship Store

TheSource Feed - Wed, 04/11/2018 - 1:04pm

Windy city rapper Vic Mensa performed a medley of hits at his meet-and-greet at the AT&T Chicago flagship store on Michigan Avenue last Friday. More than just an artist, Vic- who’s been vocal about social injustices, police brutality and gun reform, has launched Save Money Save Life Foundation non-profit organization.

The 24 year old, who recently made headlines urging Killer Mike to a gun reform debate, will help train first responders in Chicago’s most dangerous neighborhoods on the south and west sides with his foundation’s spin off called StreetMedics. His foundation would also place mental health professionals at Chicago’s most at-risk schools, in addition to UniVerse, an educational program targeting indigenous and black youth via summer mentorship.

Vic has also partnered with AT&T to empower Chicago communities and share AT&T’s Free Home Internet for Life offer to Chicago AT&T subscribers.

Safaree Seeks Therapy To Cope With Life’s Struggles

TheSource Feed - Wed, 04/11/2018 - 11:47am

Words by Chels Deline

Safaree Samuels has been in a number of overexposing and life threatening situations over the last few years.

In February, a nude picture and video was leaked from his Snapchat, followed by a robbery at gunpoint for over $183,000 worth of cash and jewelry early this April. While many would assume that this recent rise of his personal notoriety is the reason why so much drama is surrounding him,  it seems that at least the April robbery was from someone that has known him for a while. Turns out that one of the alleged robbers was a good friend of Safaree prior to his break up with Nicki Minaj.

In a series of tweets, Safaree shared that his trust was at an all time low.

However, the rapper and Love & Hip Hop star announced on twitter that he is now going to therapy, doing away with social media after 9pm and taking control of his life.

We know that there is a stigma around seeking therapy in the Black and Hip-Hop communities, but perhaps having such a popular character like Safaree opening seeking help will inspire others and change that narrative by addressing his traumatic experiences.

Up in The Source: Blac Youngsta Ranks Lady Gaga Over Tupac, Yo Gotti and Lil Boosie

TheSource Feed - Wed, 04/11/2018 - 11:43am

From outrageous music videos to “Booty” giveaways on Instagram, Memphis rapper Blac Youngsta can be considered one of 2018’s most entertaining MC’s. Apparently, Yo Gotti realized this before the rest of America, and signed him to Collective Music Group in 2015.

Two years later, he signed to Epic Records, releasing the singles “Hip Hopper” featuring Lil Yachty and “Booty,” which have both received millions of streams. With the release of his debut album, 223, in February of 2018, Blac Youngsta landed in the Top 50 upon its arrival. The album’s guests included Travis Scott, Chris Brown, and French Montana.

The rapper sat with Source TV to discuss his early Memphis days, linking up with Yo Gotti, and the power in “no” to things you don’t f**k with.

Nicki Minaj Dropping Two New Tracks This Thursday

TheSource Feed - Wed, 04/11/2018 - 7:43am

Last week word had it that Nicki Minaj had plans to release a new project on the same release date planned for Cardi B’s debut album, Invasion of Privacy. Although no Minaj project did come out, she’s now said two new songs will hit this week.

Minaj announced that fans can look forward to two new projects titled “Chun Li” and “Barbie Tingz”. As apart of her announcement, Nicki also revealed the artwork for both projects.

For the past couple of days, Nicki has been tweeting numbers in which fans believed was a countdown for the release of her new music. Furthermore, Young Thug took to his Instagram story to ensure fans knew that the ‘3’ he tweeted was in regard to the same ‘3’ Nicki Minaj had just tweeted about hours before. Young Thug then went on to make Nicki Minaj’s ‘Chun Li’ cover art his profile picture on Instagram which strongly hints that a Young Thug feature could be included in the upcoming releases.

After such a hiatus from social media and the rap game in general, it’s very exciting to see all that Nicki has been working on. Are you ready?

Today In Hip Hop History: A Tribe Called Quest Dropped Their Debut Album ‘The People’s Instinctive Travels And The Path To Rhythm’ LP 28 Years Ago

TheSource Feed - Tue, 04/10/2018 - 2:43pm

Ahead of its time to say the least, A Tribe Called Quest‘s experimental, alternative, jazz rap was originally unappreciated by mainstream audiences. It took six years for the Tribe’s first album to hit gold. The album might not have been a huge commercial success at first, but their innovative and comedic sound beautifully balanced the light-hearted social consciousness of their  tracks. Although “People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm” was critically acclaimed, some critics felt that the inspired lyricism and unique humor was at times overshadowed by the group’s immaturity and lack of focus. Their debut album did however, generate buzz within the Alternative Hip Hop community that has gained them a devout cult following. Today “People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm” is certified gold, and in The Source Magazines‘s 100 Best Rap Albums. Other accolades include a 5 mic rating from The Source, 4 stars out of 5 by the The Rolling Stone Album Guide, and a 3.5 out of 4 stars by the Chicago Tribune.

Regardless of  which generation you belong to, every true Hip Hop fan can remember the first time they heard “Can I kick It?” by saying “yes I can!”…and how it changed their perception of the genre. In honor of this special day in Hip Hop history we did some digging and found old school Source articles reviewing “People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm”, so feel free to take a look at the history.

How Condola Rashad Leaped Over Racial Lines And Became A Saint

TheSource Feed - Tue, 04/10/2018 - 11:18am

Everyone knows that Phylicia Rashad is the patron saint of all American Black children.

Who has not been anointed by her quick wit, blessed by her smile and reached a form of social salvation by her witness as Claire Huxtable on the hit series, The Cosby Show?

We all have.

And so it is only right that her daughter Condola Rashad finds herself in line to become venerated.  In the new Broadway play Saint Joan, Rashad stands on her own and delivers a Tony worthy performance as the 15th century french saint. Produced by the Manhattan Theater Club, Saint Joan will run now until the 10th of June at The Samuel J. Friedman Theatre in New York and has been met with raved reviews.

But one has to ask…

Why would a successful company like MTC cast Rashad, a Black woman, as the lead of this story about a European farm maid turned saint?

( Let’s be real… are we gonna just act like she ain’t one of the finest melanin popping sisters on Broadway keeping the Great White Way… well a little less White?)

Well after seeing the play in previews, the answer is quite clear. The three-times Tony nominated thespian is a bonafide star, and her gift elevated her beyond her race- allowing you to see past the color of her skin and dive into the content of her skill as a story-teller. She was fresh. She was convincingly vulnerable, innocent and fearless… most of all she was bad-assed! (Wait can I say that… Blessed Mother cover me)

She wasn’t just bad-assed all by herself? The cast exquisitely supported her in telling this great story of mission and faith.

The story laid out the struggle of a young woman that had the allure and God given power and charisma to influence a nation- a nation that hated that they were under the “spell” of this “witch.” Based on the marvelous and tragic life of Joan of Arc, the producers were not afraid to show the complexity of characters. Every villain wasn’t a villain and every saint well… wasn’t what they thought a saint should and would be. Actors like Russell G. Jones, Walter Bobbie, Adam Chanler-Berat, Jack Davenport, John Glover, Patrick Page, Daniel Sunjata and Maurice Jones baptizes us in the waters that even in the 21st century, women in ministry face: God speaks to women, but do we really believe that.

Written Nobel Prize and Oscar winner George Bernard Shaw with direction by Tony winner Daniel Sullivan, some how the pain of hearing God in a patriarchal world that chalks it up to either arrogance, lunacy or magic is conveyed in a way that is not damning to men. Men sometimes because of their socialization don’t know they are being religious pricks. Black women preachers, who serve in similarly oppressive environments, will find voice through Rashad’s portrayal of this young girl. Heck… should Cardi B buy a ticket, she will also associate her struggle as a woman in Hip-Hop. What this cast and crew has done by giving this generation a true example of listening to the inner voice (called it God or whatever) is saintly and deserves a headnod.

The courage of the producers (and you should you decide to go) is indicative of those who understands the importance of womanist virtue in images that flash across the new media, screens and of course the stage and you too would get a headnod.

St. Joan is delightful, powerful and a must see.

Today In Hip Hop History: Public Enemy’s ‘Fear Of A Black Planet’ Was Released 28 Years Ago

TheSource Feed - Tue, 04/10/2018 - 10:00am

April 10, 1990 was the release date of a cornerstone in hip hop music: Public Enemy’s Fear of a Black Planet. Still known as one of the most empowering albums of its time, the album was written during a pivotal era both in America and music: the Golden Age of Hip Hop.

Preceding the time where samples required clearance and approval to be used in sample-based music, the album is layered heavily with elements providing space and depth to levels of complexity previously unheard. Fear of a Black Planet‘s production team, The Bomb Squad, worked tirelessly to bring their signature sound to the album.  As Rolling Stone’s Christopher Weingarten said in an interview late last year with leading Public Enemy MC Chuck D, it was one of the…

“most sonically adventurous and politically stirring records of all time.”

Examples of some of the known samples, these from the 20th track on the album “Fight The Power”. Bomb Squad producer Hank Shocklee claimed in an interview this year there are still many more samples he’s never spoken of.

Within the first week of release, the album sold more than a million copies, coming in at number 10 on Billboard’s Top Pop Albums chart.  Commenting on several racially and politically engaging topics was the goal of the album, and the track that said it best was “Fight The Power.”  The deep rhymes and intense verbage used by Chuck in revolutionary poetry made the track not only what the group became known for, but also their critically acclaimed anthem.

Used by director Spike Lee for his film Do The Right Thing, who also filmed this music video, this track alone could be used to describe this legendary album.  Fear of a Black Planet was later listed as Rolling Stone’s 300th greatest record of all time.
